One of the best parts about living in Florence was how centrally located I was for travel. Whether it was exploring a new region of Italy, or flying to a European capital, Florence's central location and discount-carrier airport makes it an ideal city to travel from. This is also probably why it is so attractive to American students studying abroad.

I created this list to highlight some obvious and some not-so obvious ideas for easy day and weekend trips from Florence. If you're studying abroad in Florence, take advantage of Vueling, Easy Jet, and Ryan Air deals from Florence (and Pisa). For example, it is amazing how easy and inexpensive it is to get to Greece and Morocco. And, if you are simply vacationing in Florence, you can see almost all of Italy using Florence as your home base.

Day Trips:
Venice and Rome
Ok, let's start with the obvious two -- Venice and Rome. Hotel hopping through the Italian peninsula from one major city to the other is exhausting and pricey. Instead, you could get a hotel or airbnb in Florence for a week or 10 days and still see Venice and Rome. Both are easy day trips thanks to the high speed train. Simply walk to the Florence Santa Maria Novella Station, hop on an hour and 20 minute high speed train full of comfortable amenities, and arrive in Rome (with no bags to worry about). This option might not appeal to everyone, but it is a great option if you prefer staying in a smaller, quainter city like Florence (as opposed to Rome).

Cinque Terre
A day trip to the Cinque Terre is one of my favorite trips and something I do every year. Because it is such an easy day trip, lots of companies (like FlorenceForFun) offer a day excursion by bus. But you can also do it on your own by train (you just have to change at Pisa). A day trip to Cinque is so much easier that trying to navigate this treacherous region by car, and I can't even fathom dealing with luggage in these cliff-side cities.

Siena
The charming medieval city of Siena is just a bus ride away from Florence (the bus is actually better/easier than the train IMHO). You can spend a relaxing day strolling, shopping, and eating in one of the most charming cities in Italy for the price of a bus ticket.

Bologna
Bologna is the food and hipster center of Italy. Plus, it is only a 20-min high speed train ride from Florence. Bologna boasts one of the oldest universities in the world, unique trendy shopping, and hip cafes and eateries. I personally couldn't see myself spending a week there, but it makes the perfect day trip (or even evening trip for dinner... did I mention how amazing the food is in Bologna?).

Weekend:
Amalfi
The Amalfi Coast holds a special place in my heart. I spend at least three days there every summer. I am not sure which I love more, the crystal blue waters of Capri, the charming town of Positano, or the amazing views along the coastline. From Florence, you can take the high speed train to Naples and then switch to a local train, called the Circumvesuviana, to Sorrento (where I prefer to stay). From Sorrento, the cute towns that dot the coast are accessible by bus (and ferry) and the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida are just a boat ride away. You can read more tips for traveling to and in the Amalfi Coast here.

Santorini
I will never forget the first time I discovered that I could fly to the gorgeous Greek islands directly from Florence for around 70 bucks each way (depending on time of year). And the fact that the flight time is under two hours, it makes for an unforgettable, yet super convenient, weekend trip. You can read more of my Santorini cost saving tips here.

Paris
Several discount European carriers offer lots of flights to Paris from Florence every day. If you watch for sales, you could fly to Paris for as low as 29 euros (each way). You can also take the overnight train from Florence to Venice or Milan, and then on to Paris. You sleep on the train and awake refreshed in Paris!

Morocco
Both Florence and Pisa offer affordable and quick flights to Marrakesh, Morocco. I flew direct from Pisa to Marrakesh and was amazed by how quickly and easily I was transported to another world.

Amsterdam
Honestly, becuase Europe is relatively small (in comparison to the US) you can do tons of European capitals in a weekend from Florence (Prague, Budapest, Vienna, London, etc.). But, I wanted to highlight the easiest trips. These are the ones that have direct flights and can be enjoyed in a weekend. Amsterdam is one such city. Amsterdam is one of those cities that you could enjoy in just three days. Of course you could spend more time in the "Venice of the north," but unlike London, you don't need a week to feel like you have seen the city.

If you are studying abroad in Florence this upcoming spring or summer, the best advice I can give you is to take advantage of Florence's central location and the relative cheapness of European travel and see as much of Europe as you can! Hopefully this list will get you started!

Buon Viaggio!

Ever been to a polo match? Me neither. That was until two weeks ago when I was in NYC. Emily had scored tickets to the Victory Cup on Governors Island and asked if I wanted to go. I figured, "why not?" Honestly, I am a little mad at myself for not attending a match sooner. I mean, it is pretty much the perfect sport for me -- it's all about the fashion, food, and booze... and cute horses of course.

I have to admit I know zero about polo, but the pre-match drinking, eating, and socializing was a blast. And surprisingly, I even enjoyed watching the game. But, my favorite part was when I got to live out my Pretty Woman fantasy (minus the hooker part) and stomp the divots on the field. They even let us pet the horses and pose with them for pictures, like I said, my kind of sport.

Since the match was in late September, I was at a loss for what to wear. Dressing in head-to-Lilly didn't seem seasonally appropriate for New York in the fall (Florida yes, New England no). I ended up wearing this comfortable and cute pink WAYF dress. I should have not worried about being seasonally appropriate, because nobody else was. Most people wore lots of Lilly, Vineyard Vines, and Jack Rogers. My look was definitely a bit edgier, but I still loved it.

These types of dresses are a wardrobe staple for me. And whenever I see one I like at a good price, I pounce. I like that you can dress them up or down and where them to work or on the weekend. The flowy shape makes it comfortable while the elastic waist still gives you some shape and makes it figure flattering. You also can't beat the price of this dress.

What would you wear to a polo match?

PS - that close-up horse pic I snapped cracks me up.

Ok, you can stop looking, because I have found the perfect dress for fall.

Despite autumn beginning officially last week, it certainly has not felt like fall. Despite the warm temps, however, I still want to start dressing in fall's rich hues and warm florals. Enter this dress. It will give you all of the fall feelings without overheating (which I most certainly did in the other fall looks I shot last week, #doitfortheblog).

My favorite part about this dress is the illusion skirt. The skirt is sheer from the knee to the ankle. But it is not too obvious, the light has to hit it just right. In addition to the skirt, the warm colors of the dress (with a gold thread running through fabric) are perfection. You will never look washed out in this dress.

I don't know about you, but I love dresses in the fall just as much as I love them in the spring and summer. So, I love when I find a great dress in a fall floral (think warmer, deeper colors).

Em and I took these photos during a sunrise walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Sunrise on the bridge is absolutely gorgeous and if you're planning a trip to NYC, I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary. It is completely worth the wake up call, plus you can always nap later lol.

I am not sure exactly when I discovered the world of fashion blogs. But, I most definitely remember the first blog that inspired me. It was Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific. I am sure this is not surprising news as she was one of the OG fashion bloggers, and her creative style and innovative layering have dominated the fashion scene for years now.

I think what I loved most about Blair was her creativity. She experiments with pattern and color mixing, layering, and proportions. I am not the type of person who wants to see a fashion blogger "styling" jeans and a t-shirt. I want to see them try something that I may not have thought of. Sure, not all creative looks are winners, or are practical for everyday life, but, for me at least, fashion blogging should be more than just simple looks everyone can copy.

It was actually on Blair that I fist saw this gorgeous Camilyn Beth Go-Go dress. I remember immediately clicking on her link to view the dress and the brand. That was when I discovered Camilyn Beth and her gorgeous line of dresses. At the time, however, I was living the full grad-student life, only assisting with classes, and really had no need for something so sleek and stylish. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago when Camilyn Beth reached out and asked if I wanted to try one of their dresses. It was probably the fasted I had ever replied to a collaboration email. YES! Little did they know I had been dreaming for their dresses for four years.

As I scrolled through their selection of beautiful and sleek dresses, I kept returning to that original Go-Go dress. It is sleek and sophisticated, but the ruffle collar and gold back button details gives it just the right amount of modern chic-ness. When the dress arrived, I was even more impressed with the quality and fabric. It feels like a dream on and fits perfectly. Since it is fall, I decided to layer the dress with a long sleeve blouse. As I was trying it on, however, I had a spark of creative genius. I wondered, "the back details are so cute, how would this look if I wore it backwards?"

I mean, you know a dress is good when you can wear it forwards and backwards! I will probably stick to wearing as it was intended for work, but I thought it would be fun to mix it up for the blog. As I said before, I think that is the beauty of blogging - experimenting and being creative.

If you're a full-time professional, professor, or just need something beautiful for a special event, I highly recommend Camilyn Beth.

I am curious to know why you read fashion blogs and what you are looking for when you do?

If I had to pick one era to dress like for the rest of my life, it would be the 1960s. From the mini skirts, to pussy bows, to voluptuous bishop sleeves, I love the fashion elements of this pivotal era.

So naturally, when I saw this dress, I had to have it! It combines all of my favorite design details in one dress -- a warm yellow color, bishops sleeves with an exaggerate cuff, and neck bow, or pussy bow. For a day around the city with Emily, I went full-on 60s and styled it with these amazing oversized cat-eye sunnies, teased my hair, and added a bow.

Sadly, I was not the only one who loved this dress and first sight. It has already sold out, but I have linked plenty of similar items or items with great 60s details below.

PS - I have been wearing these shoes non-stop lately. These are actually my second pair, I already wore my first pair out (a summer in Europe will do that). They look very Chanel (for 1/8 of the price) and go with just about everything. And the best part is that they are comfortable enough to wear all day at work or all over NYC.

I used to think I was southern, and then I moved to Georgia.

As a Floridian, I always felt an association with the south. Even my family was from the south. My mom's side of the family is from rural Georgia, but my great grandparents relocated to Florida in the state's post-war boom.

Florida has all the trappings of the south -- you can find plenty of sweet tea, soul food, country music, and friendly locals. We eat grits, know what collard greens are, and politely smile at everyone. But, as any Floridian will tell you, Florida is a strange amalgamation of cultures. So, alongside that sweet tea you will also find guava pastries, Cuban sandwiches, and lots of geriatric Canadians lol. We also have a huge population of transplants from the northeast, which might explain my Dunkin Donuts coffee obsession. Many joke that the further south you get in Florida the more north you actually are.

While this blending of people and cultures is awesome, it also means that most Floridians (besides the panhandle and north Florida) are not very southern at all. Honestly, Florida is a weird place, and for those of us who were born and raised there (only 1 in 3 people in Florida are actually from Florida), we don't really have a larger cultural identity (unless "Florida Man" counts). Perhaps that is why I just always assumed the "south" was my closest cultural association.

Boy was I wrong. Living in a small town in Georgia has been a major culture shock. The only options on the radio are literally country or christian music. That is it. I guess I better develop a taste for country music (I have always enjoyed the sound of country music, but I struggle with the misogynistic and patriarchal undertones).

Obviously, I am missing the creature comforts of city life -- no grocery deliver service, a severe lack of cuisine options (why is everything fried and what is with pimento cheese?), no cute coffee shops, and no Nordstrom or Trader Joe's. I also always feel overdressed since no body here seems to wear anything other than shorts, jeans, and t-shirts (of course that feeling changed a bit when I started working on campus). And I am pretty sure my "wild feminist" t-shirt is not going to go over as well here. Oh, and downtown has not one, but two Confederate memorials. I have also been a little shocked by the number of abandon and run-down buildings and historic homes.

I almost forgot about the accents! Wow. Just, wow. At first I kind of chuckled when people spoke. I was not making fun, it just seemed so unreal, like an actor trying too hard to sound southern. It felt like a parody. But nope, that is really how people speak here. I am starting to get used to it though, and honestly I like it. I wonder what I sound like to them? Northern? Do Floridians have an accent?

But I don't want to paint the picture that it is all bad. People are insanely nice here... like crazy nice. When everyone lost power thanks to Irma, I had more offers that I could count for a place to stay and a warm meal. People genuinely want to know about you. They don't ask out of politeness, they really listen and engage with you. And there is no getting away with not telling someone your life story. I have also not had to open my own door or carry anything heavy since moving here. Not one person in Tampa offered to help when I spent 2 days struggling down my 3 flights of stairs and out to my car (then again, I didn't expect anyone to). And while there are a lot of historic homes in shambles, there are also many that have been carefully and lovingly restored (there does seem to be a lot of wealth inequality here).

Apologies that this post is a collection of random thoughts, but I always find it interesting what we learn about ourselves and our worldview when we are placed in a different environment, out of our comfort zone.

While my move has been overwhelming and exhausting (as all moves are), I have tried to embrace my new home and look for the positives... and drive to Atlanta whenever possible. I would love to hear any Atlanta recommendations you have!

Have you ever moved somewhere completely different? What did you struggle with?

I am calling it now. Berets are going to be everywhere this fall. Well, technically I called this two weeks ago, but as autumn officially approaches, I am doubling down on my prediction, becuase I am seeing berets everywhere!

I purchased this gorgeous red beret 6 years ago in Munich. I was visiting my German friend, Laura (we met at language school in Florence) in December. And let me tell you, Bavaria in December looks like a winter wonderland, or better yet, Narnia! Everything was covered with fresh, fluffy white snow. I, however, was ill-prepared for the cold temps. Laura took me to one of her favorite stores and convinced me I needed this red wool beret. She said it was a timeless classic. She was so right. I guess I had always assumed that no one really actually wore berets, except French mimes in movies. But as I discovered that winter in Europe, lots of European women, including French women, wear berets.

Since that winter, the beret has been a winter wardrobe staple for me (I love my grey one here and I am obsessed with my petite beret here). So, I am so happy to see the beret is trending once more. Like other classic styles, the beret never truly goes out of style, but it does become trendy again every couple decades or so (but isn't that all fashion really?). Personally, I prefer a beret with more shape and weight (like this one) so that it does not fall flat on your head.

When I saw this poppy print Kate Spade dress I immediately knew I wanted to pair it with my red beret for fall. While the poppy print is so stunning, I was shocked at how flattering and easy to wear this silk shirt dress is (it does come with a belt if you want to add more shape). FYI, I am wearing an XS small, which is not my normal Kate Spade size. I usually have to size up in Kate Spade, but this dress is really generous so make sure you size down.

Will you be rocking the beret this fall?
Here is the thing I love about For Love & Lemons -- they take soft, feminine patterns and silhouettes and add an unexpected element of sexy. Whether it is a low neckline, open back, mini hemline, or strategically placed sheer/nude panels, For Love & Lemons has certainly mastered the art of flirtatious dressing.

While most of their items are not office appropriate per se, I love their flirty, easy to wear dresses for weekends, travel, and nights out. I have never struggled to find work clothing, but I always seem to struggle to find "night out" attire. I feel like you can only wear skinny jeans and a cute blouse for dinner and drinks so many times before you need something different. Enter For Love & Lemons. Their clothing is perfect for a girls night out, dinner and drinks, and espeically a date.

I think this floral, flirty number is my favorite purchase from For Love & Lemons to date. The cut of the dress is perfection. It manages to be flattering and flirty without being tight. In fact, it actually has a loose fit (I am wearing a small FYI). The soft floral pattern and sweet pastel color palette is juxtaposed with the mini hemline and strategically placed nude panels on the upper thighs. While it could be easily be dressed up for evening (and made extra sexy with heels), I dressed it down with a fisherman's hat (my new favorite fall accessory) and burgundy cross-body bag for an afternoon in St. Petersburg.

I do a lot of online window shopping. It is part of my morning routine while enjoying my coffee. I love scrolling through new arrivals and seeing what styles, colors, and silhouettes are trending. RewardStyle makes it easy to save my online likes (even into different categories), which makes it super easy to collect and analyze what I am liking. This also keeps me from impulse buying. If you don't have RewardStyle, you can also do this on Pinterest.

I like to collect new arrivals and see what will work with my current wardrobe. It also helps me collect similar items and decide which particular style or price point works best for me and my budget. Where do I want to splurge this season and where can I save? Bookmarking items also gives me the sense of purchasing or shopping without spending money, which is always a good thing! If you want to keep up with my most recent likes, you can always click "MY WISH LIST" under the "GET THE LOOK" tab at the top of the page.

My online shopping over the past couple weeks (I have had lots of time during my move and Irma to do substantial online window shopping) has definitely revealed several key trends that I am definitely wanting to add to my fall wardrobe -- more yellow, military details, vintage accessories, velvet, millennial pink, and bold sleeves.

Of course, not all of the items saved to my wish list are realistic. Sometimes it is fun to save dream or inspirational pieces. This can help you develop your personal style and find similar items in your price-point.

This should not come as a surprise to you if you are thinking of going on (or are currently on) the academic job market -- it sucks! It is pretty much like The Hunger Games out there.

If you were not aware of this, or don't know anything about the current state of higher ed/academia, let me break it down for you real quick. As more and more universities are being run "like a business," they are making the majority of their decisions based on profit margin and not on student achievement/success or the pursuit of knowledge. Now, you might think, "doesn't this mean higher salaries for professors and better fiscal management?"Nope. The only ones profiting from this are upper-level administrators. Students are paying more than ever and their professors are making less than ever.

The assault on higher ed is particularly frightening in the humanities. Simply put the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) bring tangible economic benefits to the university, unlike the humanities. So, these fields tend to be better funded, while disciplines like English, History, and Anthropology are continually underfunded. For example, to save money when a tenured history professor retires, the university simply hires a couple adjuncts to replace them. Rarely does the university hire another tenured track professor (for whom the university would have to fund research, travel, professional development, healthcare, and retirement).

Think you know what history is? Check here.

This means that the jobs that should exist for graduating PhDs no longer exist. And, as their research funding continues to erode, they are forced to take temporary or adjunct teaching positions. When a standard tenure-track position does become available, hundreds of well-qualified PhDs are fighting for one job.

The sad reality is that most students are not even aware of the eroding of their education (especially in the humanities). They are being taught by exploited adjunct faculty who are teaching too many classes just to survive. Thus, they cannot care as much about individual students, course innovation, or competitive research.

You might be wondering, "what is wrong with hiring an adjunct?" I am not disparaging adjuncts. These are well-educated, and in many cases high-achieving, individuals in their field. My problem is with their exploitation. Someone with a PhD should not be earning part time pay with no healthcare because the university wants to save money. The average adjunct makes $2,987 per course. That means they would have to teach 20 classes a year to make 60k, and that is still without any benefits.* Nor should students, who are in many cases going into immense debt for their degree, have sub-par or overworked faculty.

Now you might be thinking, "well if you have to adjunct at first to get by, that's ok if it leads to a full-time or tenured position." This is a false promise, do not fall for it. The course load of an adjunct does not give them the necessary time to research, write, and publish, all of which are essential to landing a full-time position. Simply put, adjuncts are less competitive on the job market.

I am sharing this for two reasons. First, if you are a college student demand the faculty you deserve for the price you are paying. And second, becuase I think it is important that students who are thinking of a career in higher ed are fully aware of what is happening and the reality they will face -- you will likely not get your dream professorship, and if you are lucky enough to get job, you will likely have to move across country and shoulder a heavy teaching load with few of the academic benefits you once envisioned.

Of course, I was mostly aware of all of this when I entered my PhD program. Do I regret pursuing a PhD in history? Absolutely not. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. It made me more thoughtful and analytical in every aspect of my life. That said, however, I went in with my eyes wide open. I knew the challenges I would face and tried to position myself strategically to ensure I would be able to build a sustainable career when I graduated. Thank goodness I was successful, and I am so grateful for my amazing advisors and the support I received along the way.

I know this is long and a pretty doom-and-gloom kind of post. But I think it is important that people are aware of what is going on. I also have a couple follow up posts in the works in which I plan to share tips on how to position yourself to more successfully in order to better navigate this hostile job market.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and some of your experiences on the academic job market below!

PS - Don't even get me started on how little we pay primary and secondary teachers. What is wrong with us? It is time to change and value education! Businesses invest in what is important... just saying.

As I unpacked my new bedroom, I came to a realization -- I am a crazy hat lady... and I am totally fine with that!

But seriously, there are currently 13 hats hanging on my wall (like the little works of art they truly are).

I got into hats years ago out of necessity. Long days touring under the Tuscan sun was dangerous for my skin and bleached my hair. What I unexpectedly discovered, however, is that traveling with a hat is amazing. The right hat completes a look and makes you look instantly chic while covering un-styled and/or dirty hair. Paired with over-sized sunglasses, you can even look great in photos with virtually no make up! See exhibit A. After discovering this little travel and life secret, I fully embraced the hat... even when I was not traveling.

Each season I add to my growing collection. I take very good care of my hats, you might even say obsessive. I keep them clean them and never bend the brims. When boater hats took off two seasons ago, I was in heaven, since I have always preferred structured hats over floppy hats.

This fall hats are going to be a major accessory. I feel like the hat is making a come back, and I couldn't be happier. The boater is here to stay (but in darker colors and heavier fabrics) along with the wide-brim fedora. But a new silhouette has burst on to the scene -- the Greek Fisherman cap. I am also thrilled to see that berets are back in a big way. Remember my all-time favorite hat, my petite beret?

People tend to feel like they are either a hat person or not a hat person. But trust me, if you feel like you are not a hat person, you just haven't found the right hat. If you are looking for a good trial hat, I would stick to the classic beret. Berets pretty much look good on everyone.

To get you started on your fall hat shopping, I have rounded up my favorites in each trending style below. Happy hat shopping!

I decided to spend my last weekend in my home state exploring one of my favorite Florida cities, St. Augustine. I had not been in years, and I was quickly reminded why I have so many fond childhood memories from there. Of course, the city has changed over the years, and I was fortunate to have my friend Annmarie (a local and also my friend who lived in Venice this summer) to show me around.

We hit up all of the usual sights - Flagler College, the old fort, lighthouse, and the charming historic streets in and around St. George Street. The highlight of the day, however, was our brunch at Preserved. This restaurant serves up locally-sourced southern cuisine in a historic house complete with front porch. The ambiance is great, and the food is even better. We tried the shrimp and grits, oyster Eggs Benedict, and homemade scones and biscuits.

We spent the rest of our time at the beach, because as much as I am not exactly a beach person, I think I will miss living so close to the ocean most of all.

For a day of walking and exploring St. Augustine, I wore this adorable printed wrapped dress from Madewell. I like it because it is easy to wear, will transition into fall, and can be dressed up for work (with a blazer and heels) or down with a field jacket and sneakers for weekend adventures. There is something about sundresses and sneakers that I love. It is unexpected and insanely practical. I swear these Superstars look great with just about anything, and I am dying to get them in this great pink color.

Have you ever been to St. Augustine?

While moving is stressful and utterly exhausting, it is also the perfect excuse to purge your belongings and refresh your decor.

Most of my furniture in Florida was hand-me-down or DIY Ikea hacks, meaning the cost of moving everything to Georgia exceeded its value. Not to mention Ikea furniture doesn't exactly move well. So, I decided to purge. I actually love getting rid of things and simplifying my life. But, despite my natural proclivity to expel clutter, I was shocked at just how much crap I had accumulated in my Tampa apartment! After a solid week of cleaning, sorting, and purging, I was able to fit everything in two car loads to Georgia.

Of course, getting rid of almost everything meant that I had some serious furniture shopping and decorating to do for my new place (I love my new apartment by the way)! My new job and move happened so quickly that I did not have much time to think about any sort of decor scheme. So, I just started scanning Pinterest and my favorite decor websites like crazy. Not knowing where to begin, I started with trying to find a couch. Why is finding a well-made couch at a decent price so challenging? I ended up going with a gorgeous French-inspired tufted sofa from Lamps Plus of all places. They actually have a great selection at good prices, and lots of people online swear by their quality. Mine has not arrived just yet, but I promise to share my review when it does.

After spending a week obsessing over picking a single sofa, I decided to just start pinning anything I came across that I liked, figuring that some sort of pattern would emerge... and thankfully it did! Surprise, there is a lot of blue and gold. To help achieve a more cohesive look, I started a photoshop file where I could arrange the items and make sure everything worked together. This is a critical step for me. I need to be able to see everything together because pieces I thought were perfect, simply don't work. It also helps me make difficult decisions. Decorating is, after all, a long-term and costly commitment!

I am still waiting for most of my furniture to arrive, but below is a collage of what I have (or planning) to order. I don't want to brag, but I think I managed to find a lot of really chic and quality items for some really great prices! On that note, why are rugs and curtains so ridiculously expensive?

All prints are from my Etsy store, and the pillows are Caitlin Wilson.

You have probably noticed that I don't exactly wear a lot of pants. I have never really liked them. In fact, there was a period in middle school that I flat out refused to wear pants, even jeans. My argument was that they were so uncomfortable and skirts were far more agreeable. I pretty much stand by this still today.

While I have come around to jeans, I still gravitate to skirts over pants. I find skirts more comfortable, easier to wear, and more flattering. I do, however, make exceptions when warranted. These pants are one such exception.

I tried them on a whim while shopping the new arrivals at Club Monaco. My first thought was that they looked super comfortable and I loved the cropped ruffle hem, but I seriously doubted if I could pull them off. Cropped ruffle-hemmed pants are going to be all the rage this fall, but it is not always the easiest look for petite women to pull off, especially in a bold pattern. I was shocked when I tried them on and loved them! Not only are they as comfy as they look, but they are surprisingly flattering and easy to style. I plan on wearing them with a black blazer for work.

To ensure they did not shorten my already short frame, I wore them with my new nude, pointy-toe Melissa mules. Not to beat a dead horse here, but don't let the fact that these shoes are plastic PVC deter you. They look super stylish, are virtually indestructible, and feel like you are walking on little pillows. Melissa sent these to me a couple weeks ago with a bunch of other new fall styles. The nude doesn't seem to be available online yet, but the black is here. If you are looking for nude specifically, I also love these.

What are your thoughts on the cropped-ruffle hem for fall?

This blog post is long over due!

I am not going to lie, one of my favorite activities in Florence, and in Italy more generally, is eating. The food is simply incredible -- fresh, simple, and flavorful. No one should diet when in Italy. Of course, with all of the walking and the freshness of the ingredients you really don't need to. You can basically live out your food fantasies with little regret or weight gain (I said little not zero lol).

Since I love eating so much, I like to keep up to date on Florence's food scene. There is always a new and exciting place to try. Naturally, I have blogged about my favorite places to eat in Florence before (here and here), but, as with any city, places come and go and my recommendations were in need of an update. So I have made a comprehensive and up-to-date map of my favorite places to eat in Florence. I have also decided to round up my top ten below!

My Top 10:

Best Way to Treat Yo'self:
Irene
I normally don't advise eating at places located on major squares or near monuments. Irene, however, is the rare exception to this rule. As part of the Savoy hotel the ambiance and quality of Irene is unparalleled. The menu is fresh, seasonal, and creative. Whether you want to indulge in a 4-course extravaganza complete with calamari, asparagus and truffle bruschettone, risotto, and dessert (like Georgette and I did), or just fancy cocktails while people watching, Irene is a can't-miss chic bistro in the heart of Florence.

Best Pizza:
Simbiosi
I became obsessed with Simbiosi this summer. I also lived around the corner, so I ate there a lot. Simbiosi is actually two restaurants -- a pizzeria and a hip eatery. All the ingredients, and even the wine, are organic and fresh. My personal favorite is the zucchini and pesto pizza. It's life affirming! The saffron lasagna at the restaurant is also amazing.

Life-Changing Gnocchi:
Osteria Santo Spirito
Osteria Santo Spirito is my go-to recommendation when people ask me where to eat in Florence. Why? The truffle gnocchi is the best thing that will ever happen to you!

Best Breakfast:
Giacosa
I use the term breakfast loosely here. Italians consider a pastry and a cappuccino breakfast. If you must subsist on just this, I highly recommend going for the best cappuccino in Florence, which is served at Roberto Cavalli's uber-chic bar, Giacosa.

My Favorite Gelato:
Cantina Gelato
Good gelato is not hard to find in Florence, but my personal favorite is Cantina. I love their Nutella and marscapone and ricotta and fig.

Most Local Experience:
Il Giova
I ate lunch here everyday when I was living in Florence and working in the archive. It is a tiny hole-in-the-wall frequented by locals. The menu changes daily based on what's fresh and you won't find any english here!

Crowd Pleaser:
Il Teatro
Il Teatro is always a crowd (and student) pleaser. They offer a great variety of traditional dishes and serve the best coccoli in town! Don't know what coccoli is? Put it on your must-try list in Florence. Prices are great and they are always group and student friendly.

Best Variety:
Mercato Centrale
Not sure what you want to eat? Maybe you want to try some street food or sample a bunch of different things. Then the central market is for you. The down stairs is the traditional market, but the upper level is a modern Italian food court.

Hippest Cafe:
La Ménagérie
Cafe and coffee culture have finally arrived to Florence, and there is no hipper and chicer place than this cafe, slash florist, slash boutique.

My Favorite Aperitivo:
Gallery
I love a good aperitivo. It is a great way to get some much needed veggies and try lots of new foods. Gallery, hands down, has the best vegetable offering, which may not seem important now, but after a week or two of pasta, pasta, pasta, you will be happy to see so many veggies!

Summer in the city can be warm, to say the least. I have never been one who can wear pants or jeans in the summer (seriously, how do Italians do it?). On hot days I always gravitate to skirts and dresses, even better if they are silky and light weight.

I feel like lately Club Monaco can do no wrong. Seriously, they have been killing it for the last couple of years. Every time they release a new collection, I struggle to pick out a few key pieces, because I want it all! The worst part is that Club Monaco isn't exactly cheap, so I have to choose wisely. Fortunately, when I returned to NYC from Florence is was summer sale season and I picked up both of these fab pieces for a steal (by CM standards, anyway). And don't forget CM always offers a student discount with a valid ID and/or .edu email address, which even works on online orders!

With my new job fast approaching, I have been trying to only purchases items that I can also dress up for work. Building a professional, yet stylish wardrobe is never easy, especially when you have been on writing grants and researching/working abroad for the better part of the last three years. I have not exactly been investing in professional work wear. Whoops. Better late then never I guess.

What are your favorite stores for stylish work wear?

I don't know about you, but I have a love/hate relationship with change. On the one hand, I crave it. I love new places, new people, and new challenges. These keep me inspired and motivated. But on the other hand, too much change, too quickly can overwhelm me.

Over the past few weeks there has been a lot of change in my life, leaving me feeling excited, inspired, and totally scared!

Let me back up for a second. Over the summer while abroad I began applying for full-time positions in global education and international studies departments. I felt like a sent out a ton of cover letters and resumes and heard absolutely nothing for weeks. Slowly despair set in. My PhD funding ended in the spring and I was facing unemployment! Then, seemingly out of know where, I heard back from several schools. Three wanted phone/Skype interviews within the week. It is amazing how quickly things change sometimes. I went from no prospects to a couple very good prospects in a matter of days. Just before I left Italy, I was notified that two of these universities wanted to bring me to campus for on-site interviews.

Suddenly the ball was rolling. I didn't have much time to think. I focused on the task at hand and before I knew it I was excepting a great job offer in another state! The following day it hit me -- everything in my life is about to change. Don't get me wrong, I am so excited about landing such an amazing position, especially given the current state of the academic/university job market. Yet, at the same time, I truly enjoy my life in Tampa -- great friends, a home I love, close to the ocean, delicious food scene, my favorite gym classes, and the comfort of my routine and what is familiar. Yet, I also felt like I was beginning to stagnate in Tampa. I am nearing the end of writing my dissertation, but I am feeling very uninspired and I am laboring to finish. There also isn't any opportunity for me in Tampa, nothing to challenge me or push my career forward. So as anxious as I am to leave my happy life in Tampa behind, I am also ready for a new adventure.

In many ways landing this job was nothing short of a miracle. It is at a great university doing exactly what I love -- teaching and researching history and working on developing study abroad programs (for privacy reasons, I don't want to broadcast the name of the university). If you are familiar with the university/academic job market, you understand what a coup landing this job was. It is like the Hunger Games out there for young scholars. After watching so many friends get screwed over by the war on tenure or being exploited as adjuncts for years, I knew I wanted to take my career in a different direction. So from the start, I had my eye on more administrative positions. Over the next couple of weeks I hope to share what I learned about applying for and transitioning to the administrative side of academia. While PhDs acquire incredible skill sets over their (sometimes) decade-long education, we are rarely taught how to transition and market ourselves outside of academia.

And don't worry, I fully plan on completing my PhD. But, the reality is that a dissertation comprised of original archival research on early modern Italy simply cannot be completed in 4.5 years.

I plan on spending my last couple weeks in Tampa/Florida enjoying all of my favorite things, in between packing of course. Follow me on Instastories (@historyinhighheels) to see what I am up to and how I plan on decorating my new place!

I don't usually wear a lot of yellow, unless of course it's in a great lemon print. But I have seen a lot of saffron hued items for fall and I am loving all of them! Fall is usually all about the warm neutrals and jewel tones. That's why I am so excited to see this unexpected dose of color.

I stumbled on this little Topshop dress while strolling through Nordstrom last week. I was immediately drawn to the color, but I also loved the slip look. Slip dresses are the perfect 90s throw back when layered with a blouse (or t-shirt on more casual days) underneath. Instead of a 90's choker, however, I opted for an over-sized pussy bow.

Did you notice the shoes? These glitter platforms are so fun! And, they are from my favorite shoe company -- Melissa Shoes. If you read here regularly, then you have definitely heard me sing the praises of Melissa Shoes. They are a special PVC plastic making them the most durable and comfortable shoes I have found for travel (seen here and here this summer). Seriously, disregard everything you think you know about plastic shoes.

While I was abroad this summer Melissa reached out to me and said they wanted to send me some shoes from their fall line. Obviously, I was very excited about this! I expected a pair or two and could not believe my eyes when two giant boxes showed up on my door step. They have some really great styles for fall and I can't wait to share more. Honestly, these glitter platforms are not something I would wear often, but I think they are so fun for styling a look like this or a night out. I love the height they give while still being comfortable.

But back to my favorite color for this fall. I definitely want to add a couple more saffron pieces to my fall wardrobe. I have rounded up some of my current favorites below.

dress // blouse (similar) // c/o shoes // bag

Do you dare to wear saffron this fall?
I am a huge fan of the shirt dress. They are classic, chic, and perfect for a hot summer day in the city.

The only thing better than a great shirt dress is a bright kelly green shirt dress. In addition to the vibrant color, I also love the updated square neck and flutter cap sleeve. If you are looking for something more classic, this dress also comes in navy.

This easy, flattering shape was perfect for a summer day exploring NYC with friends. And you can add a little summer sex appeal but unbuttoning a few strategic buttons.

Much to my delight, the wrap dress is back, and in a big way! Long overdue if you ask me. Not that this universally flattering silhouette has ever gone out of style, but it does fall in and out of favor.

I have always loved a great wrap dress, because nothing is sexier and more feminine. I found this perfect navy number while abroad. It is by a new-to-me French brand, Réalisation. This brand has certainly mastered the sexy sundress. Each dress also has a tongue in cheek description. This dress, the Alexandra, reads "Here’s what we know. Men love sundresses. We also know this point is actually pointless because we women dress for ourselves and ourselves only. But sometimes... just sometimes you need a get-out-of-jail-free card."

A perfect fitting wrap dress highlights and yet subtly reveals all of the right places. I personally love the balance of a long-sleeve mini dress. If your curvy or busty, wrap dresses are great becuase you can simply size up for added coverage, but the wrap style can still be cinched to highlight your curves. The long sleeve silhouette will also seamlessly transition into fall with over-the-knee boots or tights and booties.

While this dress is French, I have found so many great wrap dresses this season state-side. I recently picked up this Madewell number, which I love because it can be dressed up or down. Shop more of my favorite wrap dress below!

Sadly, my summer in Italy came to an end at the beginning of August. Fortunately, my disspointment in having to return state-side was assuaged by a quick trip to my favorite US city, New York. My trans-Atlantic flight was to and from JFK, so I decided to make the most of it and visit Emily on the front and back end of my summer abroad. This turned out to be a great decision!

I never get enough of NYC, and Emily and I always have a great time trying new restaurants, exploring new streets, and scouting new photo locations. Not to mention the amazing shopping, which was so nice after my 3-month shopping hiatus. Emily, the great friend that she is, even let me order some items online while I was away so they could be waiting for me at her apartment when I got home. This was especially great during the Nordstrom anniversary sale -- can't miss those discount Hanky Pankies!

A couple weeks before returning home I was doing a little online retail therapy and I spotted this frilly pink For Love & Lemons Dress. I was so happy with my For Love & Lemons top I had ordered in the spring before departing, that I decided to go for it and order this dress. I loved the shape and the color, and hoped it would work with my favorite Lack of Color Hat. Spoiler, it did!

I am always a sucker for an easy, sweet summer dress (also available in this color combo). When the temperature heats up, I always reach for light weight dresses. I especially love dresses like this one that are comfortable and easy to wear, but still figure flattering. Despite having a looser, flowy fit, the deep cut of the bust and empire waist gives it a flattering shape. You can also further cinch the waist with the tie in the back. I was so happy to return and find that this dress lived up to my expectations. Plus, I had no clean clothes left and needed something to throw on and explore the city with Em!

Ok, let me start by being completely honest -- I didn't love Genoa. I like the history and the idea of Genoa, but the actual city doesn't exactly have loads of charm. There are cute little corners here and there, fashionable cafes popping up ad hoc, and some gorgeous historical architecture, but like many port cities, Genoa tends to be a bit rough around the edges.

While a bit brusque today, the Serene Republic of Genoa ruled the Mediterranean Sea from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The city's power and prestige peaked in the middle ages, which explains why today the city is famous for its elaborate and maze-like medieval quarter. The "old city" as it is known is a web of narrow medieval roads that snake their way through the city. Emily and I wandered these streets until we stumbled on the gorgeous striped churches of San Pietro in Banchi and the city's cathedral, San Lorenzo.

Also worth visiting are two of the city's royal palaces - the Palazzo Reale and the Villa del Principe. Both are stunning Renaissance structures, and the latter is stilled used by the Doria Pamphilj princess when she is in town.

In addition to sightseeing, it is really important that while in Genoa you eat pesto. No, I am serious. This is the region that invented pesto and focaccia and they are incredible. I grabbed a piece of pesto pizza while walking around the city and it about changed my life.

After eating and wandering our way through Genoa, Emily and I headed the colorful seaside fishing village of Boccadesse for the evening. It was a welcome respite from the city and the perfect way to spend the afternoon and evening. Plus, it was a much better match for our aesthetic.

While researching places to visit in Liguria beyond the famed Cinque Terre and Portofino, I stumbled on images of the seaside abbey of San Fruttuoso. I was immediately struck by its unique beauty and decided Emily and I simply had to visit. It turned out to be a great decision.

San Fruttuoso was a remote medieval Greek monastery turned Benedictine abbey. By the 20th century the abandoned abbey had become property of the noble Italian Doria Pamphilj family who later donated it to FIA, a historic preservation society, who renovated and now protect the monastery and the small village that surrounds it. Today, San Fruttuoso is only accessible by boat or two hiking paths.

The town is small and remains dominated by the abbey. You can tour the church and abbey, enjoy the crystal clear blue water, indulge in a delicious pesto or fresh seafood meal, or explore the rugged hiking paths that wind through the protected nature park. But as you can see from the photos, the beach and water are the real draw. The easiest way to get to San Fruttuoso is by public ferry, which departs from Portofino every hour in the summer.

I cannot believe it took me more than ten years of traveling in Italy before I visited the charming town of Portofino. When planning my exploration of Liguria I had to include the famed Portofino. This small fishing village entered the international spotlight when it was discovered by wealthy English travelers in the nineteenth century. Since then it has remained a premier destination for the elite. The charming and colorful port is dominated by super yachts every summer.

It was the remoteness that initially attracted wealthy travelers and continues to attract them today. This means that getting to Portofino is not easy. You must first travel to the larger seaside town of Santa Margherita and then take a bus, taxi, or ferry to Portofino. The best way to arrive, however, is by private boat or private taxi boat.

The actual town of Portofino is quite small. It consists of the port and a couple of designer-lined cobblestoned streets. Emily and I started our day with a coffee at an outside cafe overlooking the port before hiking up to the church of St. George for the best views of the city. After taking in the view, we headed back down into to town and wondered the colorful streets while salivating over the gorgeous fashion on display in the designer boutiques. We grabbed a quick bite and then walked to the Hotel Splendido, which boasts a splendid (sorry, could resist) view of the entire city. We sipped prosecco, enjoyed the view, and toasted to a delightful day. While we both enjoyed our time in Portofino, we decided to just spend one day there so that we could explore other cities in the area (more on that next week!).

I ordered this postcard print J.Crew dress specifically for this day-trip to Portofino. I knew it would be perfect and after three months of no American shopping, I was so excited for something new! Emily, the good friend that she is, brought it over to me in Italy. It is such a fun print and the style of the dress just embodies the feeling of being on vacation.
As I have shared before, Venice was never high on my list of Italian cities (I even called it overrated here). That was because, like many, most of my experiences in Venice were subpar at best -- it was crowded, ridiculously hot in the summer, expensive, and I never seemed to eat as well as I did in other Italian cities. Sure, I recognized Venice as an unique and beautiful place, but I saw visiting Venice as obligatory rather than enjoyable.

My negative view of Venice began to change when I met Sophia. Sophia and I met in the archive in Florence. In addition to sharing a love of Italian history and art history, Sophia also worked in study abroad. But while I worked with students in Florence, Sophia worked in Venice. As our friendship grew, she invited me to visit her in Venice (where she lived/lives the majority of the time). Staying with someone who is basically a local changed everything. I saw Venice in a completely new light -- we ate well, strolled almost deserted squares and streets, sip prosecco at sunset, and interacted with actual Venetians! Sophia and I were reminiscing the other day and we joked about just how many miles we covered on the first day I visited. I am pretty sure it remains a one-day walking record for both of us. Although, we came close to this record this past May in Paris.
PS - Sophia just started a blog about her experiences in Venice here!

Thanks to Sophia's Venetian insights, I have grown to enjoy Venice a bit more with each passing visit. And my change of heart was cemented this summer when a friend and fellow study abroad colleague, Annmarie, decided to stay in Venice for the summer. Having two friends living in Venice plus this year's unseasonably cooler temps made Venice one of my favorite destinations this summer. In fact, I visited three times! Basically, Annmarie, Sophia, and I spent our time in Venice together exploring, taking photos, "spritzing," eating, and laughing.
To celebrate and share my new found love of Venice, I have created a map guide for the city, highlighting the best of Venice in the hopes that you might appreciate Venice from the start (or see her in a new light after a bad experience).
