Not getting political is a statement in itself these days, and I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with people who choose to continue living in ignorance. You summed up the issues so nicely, I'm surprised you lost any followers at all! I guess you just can't please everybody.

I especially love your last paragraph. We shouldn't follow anything blindly! I'm liberal-leaning, but I try to hear from multiple viewpoints and think critically about what's going on. I know liberal news sources can be just as biased and overdramatized as conservative sources. Neither side is perfect, so to go along with either side unthinkingly is dangerous. It bothers me how many people are content to stay uninformed and spout out faulty arguments in defense of what's happening right now. We all need to be vigilant and hold our government accountable.Haleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15901482771696539912noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369547557247475858.post-82410313124921939362017-02-05T16:00:16.416-05:002017-02-05T16:00:16.416-05:00Absolutely! Last week my class was covering Nationalism and students were making similar connections to present day events. Class has definitely taken on a darker tone (they got really into Hobbes), but I think it is also empowering them in so many ways. I admire the connections they make and the lessons they take away. History for the win, once again!Ashley Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00236510259497625169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369547557247475858.post-85576633081176157002017-02-05T15:55:52.011-05:002017-02-05T15:55:52.011-05:00Thank you Laura, that complement means so much. I'm sorry that you feel threatened and unsafe. Please remember that most people who disagree or voice concern do so because they love this country and all of its people! I noticed that a couple of bloggers who have spoken up received a lot of hurtful comments and unfollows. This is why I assumed I would have to field much of the same. I was pleasantly surprised, however, that I only lost 17 followers and didn't receive one negative comment! In my 101 class this week we covered Plato and Aristotle's critiques of democracy and the threat of demagoguery. Add to that the fact that at least half my students are internationals, and it has been a tense week. Still, I feel fortunate that history also offers lessons about how to resist, organize, and most importantly, take care of one another.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04549977159655905776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369547557247475858.post-72238137543262469392017-02-04T10:50:33.910-05:002017-02-04T10:50:33.910-05:00Thank you for this post. This I think shows exactly why it's important to study history, so that we are able to get our feelings and arguments across in a thoughtful, reasonable way. I'm very concerned about the actions this administration has already taken, but I am comforted by the thousands of people peacefully protesting and advocating for what's right and for thoughtful posts like yours. Thank you so much for posting this and sharing your thoughts. I know you voice concern about immigrants and refugees, but I am concerned about our freedom as Americans. What happened at Berkley is horrific. I would not let me husband wear his Trump shirt out, for fear he would be attacked. Very troubling. Thank you for your civil tone in your post. We need more civil discourse. charhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07357904793705160891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7369547557247475858.post-24925542822416158902017-02-03T15:44:02.836-05:002017-02-03T15:44:02.836-05:00Thank you for posting. So many bloggers and social media people seem to be so afraid of making their politics known and don't want to isolate anyone so they just avoid saying anything. I think at this moment people should be embarrased if they're not speaking out and making their position on things known. Thank you so much for making this post Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04817973268255475434noreply@blogger.com
