Outfit: Red, White, and Warm

blazer (very old, similar here and here) // turtleneck // skirt // tights // wellies // beanie

Who says you can't wear bright colors in winter? As I begin to think about how I am going to pack seven months of clothing in two suitcases (it's like picking your favorite children!), I am also thinking about how I can make my clothes work through multiple seasons. Figuring out how to layer or "winterize" will save me money (let's just say I don't have a lot of winter clothes) and packing space.

I was a bit skeptical about how this outfit would turn out. I have always loved how my favorite red fluted skirt looks with this nautical striped blazer, but was unsure that I could make it winter-time appropriate. I have purchased a couple plain turtlenecks and tights in the hopes they would layer well under what I already own. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the turtleneck and tights layered underneath! I topped the outfit with my go-to wellies (the packable kind) and, believe it or not, my very first beanie. I think I am officially a beanie believer.

I am sure the rest of the country is not loving this fall's crazy chilly temps, but it has proven to be great practice for me and has been super helpful for figuring out what will work this winter in Florence.

Hope everyone eats too much tomorrow and enjoys their long holiday weekend!

  1. I really like how you mixed two sizes of stripes here!

    Sweet Spontaneity

  2. Do the capsule wardrobe! I've had one for the entire season and I am so not sick of it. It is going to make holiday travel SO easy since I don't have to think about what I'm packing--I can simply dump my entire wardrobe into a suitcase and go! I really love the tutorial on

    1. Thanks Andee, I need to look into it more. It just scares me to bring so few pieces for three seasons over seven months!

  3. You totally rock that beanie! Now you got me thinking about investing in one!

    1. I vote yes! My red one from Old Navy just came in and it is even cuter!

  4. Hi Ashley!

I'm looking into buying packable Hunter boots, but haven't been able to find a place to try them on. I'm typically a size 8, but the regular Tall Gloss Hunters in a size 8 are HUGE on me, even with a thick sock. What has your experience been with Hunter sizing, and do you know if the Tour style runs smaller in the foot?

    a glittering assemblage

    1. Hi Maddie, I have two pairs of the packable tour boots, and for both I took my normal size (7). They are a little big to allow for a thick sock or fleece liner, but not huge. I am not currently home to check the size of my tall gloss boots, but I got them in London years ago and I am afraid they might be in UK sizing. But when I get home, I will look and let you know. On the bright side, if you order from Zappos or Norstrom returns are super fast and easy, so if you need to try a couple times until you got the sizing right it's not a big deal. Hope this helps!

    2. Thanks Ashley! That was what I was planning to do, and its always nice to have a second opinion!
